south coast | surfing saturday

it might have been a horrid windy, rainy, cold friday - saturday night.
but the morning brought some good surf to the beach on my doorstep, the rain stopped and the sun even came out for a while. I live directly above this beach sometimes I get to realise just how lucky I am to live in the place I do.

sunday

I have been really busy with all sorts of stuff so haven't been here very much, but rather than complain as I feel like doing. I thought a nice picture of the sun over the sea taken this morning as I was hunting down a copy of the observer (my local newsagent had not received their usual delivery) would be better than a load of moaning.
things have been a bit of a struggle this week and I am really hoping that stuff gets clearer (and more fun) in the week/weeks to come.

carol gets a new car

a strange, but very nice day. as (mrs g) carol got her 'brand new' fiat grande punto (diesel). it was strange to see the mileometer reading 7 miles when we collected it from fiat main dealer this morning. especially as my trusty land rover has over than 125,000 miles on the clock. it was a good day (even warm) in the autumn sunshine of cornwall.

nr. truro

I am not a regular visitor to national trust gardens/buildings for a few reasons (too silly to go into here). anyway I did get to visit trelissick gardens just outside truro on saturday. perhaps more impressed with the house that is still lived in by its current owners (the garden was given to the national trust in 1955), I really liked the fact that the manor house was bulit in the shelter of the river valley but has amazing view across the fal river.

surf stuff

last friday was a good sunny day (at home in cornwall). carol (mrs g) along with sue, & claire finally were abe to get things sorted out and arrange a full 2 plus hours of surf training/lesson. so good to see people enjoying something that is so important to me. even though I wasn't feeling too well that day (dodgy fish & chips a couple of days previous) I had a great day watching from the beach. impressed with their efforts in a dropping swell with still a bit of strength left.

summer?

I remember writing something similiar last august, as the weather becomes even more wet and cold in cornwall. we/I have such a short memory so I thought I would post a couple ofpicture taken just last week in between the rain showers we seem to have every day each august. certainly over the last three years down here.

sunny travels

I have been out and about over the last couple of weeks/weekends. covering 1500+ miles on very different journeys for very different reasons, all in the south west of the uk.
only managed to take a few pictures, see below.

Luca - show @ liskeard

I make no excuses for actively promoting my eldest son luca here.
he is off to glasgow school of art (sculpture & envirnmental art) in the new academic year.
these are some pictures I sneaked out, from his private view tonight on my phone so with apologies for the poor quality.

you can see some pictures of the previously referenced red tree. I like the 'wire head' (middle picture). really pleased he is moving in this way and consider all this as the start of something bigger and better, rather than the end of hs time in cornwall.

at home on the harbour side

on friday I went crab fishing with my 10 year old. the harbour is only a walk away from where we live. as a small child I went crab fishing when I stayed with my aunt who used to live on the other side of the harbour. it was the first time he had ever sat by the harbour side in the sunshine for a few hours, with a crab line in hand. yet we have lived there for almost as long as he has been alive. he is now ckken to do it again with his friends from school.

I think when you live somewhere that is a popular holiday & day trip destination it is all too easy to ignore the things that many visitors do. but last week we didn't and had a great day crab fishing or as we put all the crabs we caught safely back in to the water, feeding the crabs.

lucky

every now and again I find myself getting stressed with stuff (especially, but not solely with work) and have to make a concerted effort to get down to the beach. so on saturday after a good day, even considering I had just watched my favourite professional rugby team loose. I remembered that I hadn't see the sea for a while even though I live less than a mile from the ocean and that I had been running around after myself for a few days being very unproductive.

so I just took a tiny detour on the drive home to spend some time at the beach at sunset. It doesn't take much to make me realise just how lucky I am to live where I do.

a blatant plug >>

I make no apologies,  just thought I would give a plug for cornwall's coolest (not the best name perhaps but still) a social networking site worth a look if you are in the SW. I have to say I don't know much about its creation but like the idea.
facebook, my space, & the like are fine especially to share pictures with friends and family else where (globally) but I can see a real future in smaller regional social networks, where the chance of actually knowing the people who are contacts, for social and work reasons

august day >> it's dull but positive

today has been another day of trying to get things done. having achieved a bit I found myself waiting by the river near home. I was driving luca around in his preparation for his part in the hidden art exhibition (he is off to godolphin house in the morning). as usual while I wait anywhere I always try to find things that interest me. while waiting looking at the river I started thinking about the photo post cards that I first saw in the 1960's as below (I was just a child then). where often the colours were slightly too bright and the layers were sometimes out of registration. I took this photo (above) as the dull light was making any bright colours more prominent. it is hardly a great advert for a summer (august) day in cornwall, but I was pleased with the way its dullness made it attractive.

hidden art at godolphin house

I have to declare an interest in my plugging for this years hidden art exhibition at godolphin house, cornwall (Saturday 23 - monday 25 august) as my eldest son luca is involved both as a curator and an exhibitor. as I write he is still thinking and working on his piece to be installed as part of 'the courtyard' section, (see hidden art curated).

"This year guest curators from a range of backgrounds have been invited to collaborate with Hidden Art Cornwall on the project. Each curator has selected a room or exterior space at Godolphin and developed their own brief for the project, inspired by the setting of Godolphin House".

summer?

I hadn't really intended to post today but I got back home cornwall from sussex (& brighton) today and checked through some of the pictures I had taken whilst fleeting from cornwall to the midlands (fri) birmingham airport down to west sussex (sat) for lunch, then spent a day in brighton (sun). brighton is a great place a place I have spent lots of time in the past, my younger sister lives just outside brighton the rottingdean side. was in her garden yesterday afternoon when I took this picture on my mobile. as you can see it is a summer scene without the summer if that makes sense. between showers and a strong wind her son was playing in their garden I just thought this little picture. summed up the summer well this (august) weekend just passed, so well.

off for a few days

I am off to birmingham airport on friday morning taking carol and ben to catch a plane to amsterdam then their connection on to ecuador for their exciting adventure in to the jungle as well as the reason for the trip jimmy & gaby's wedding. sorry I can't make it to the wedding with them but hope you all have a great time over there. I will hopefully be able to add some ecuadorian stuff about it here sometime soon.

once they are safely off, its down to sussex for a couple of days seeing family before returning home to cornwall so a fair bit of driving for me in the next days. I should (all being well) be back updating sometime next week.

summer in cornwall, surf, music and weekend surfers

I love watching the weather, especially if it is to do with surf forecasting in my home area cornwall. I have just taken added pictures from the bbc weather forecast pages for 1.00pm tomorrow (saturday 5th 0f july) not that the day has any significance other than it's a weekend in the cornish summer when the SW is already full of tourists and weekend surfers. trouble is the wind will be strong the rain will be plentiful and the air temperature lower than it has been all week. but there will be surf and some seriously good surf for those who bother to search it out. oh yes and jack johnson is playing two nights at watergate bay (nr. newquay). me I am set to spend the weekend under a deluge of course work that has to be moderated by next week, why do I always leave things until the last minute.

re-visiting brighton and hove

as I mentioned in mondays post I was back sussex over this past weekend. I grew up sussex, having been born in brighton. always say that brighton is a lovely place to come from rather than a lovely place to live. having moved to cornwall many years ago now I consider cornwall home. very occasionally brighton & hove becomes special, this past sunday was one of those days. we went to palmera square, hove for a lunchtime picnic. the weather was really good sunny with a cooling breeze, sometimes things really are worth re-visiting.

more surfing stuff

I was interested in this story. I was it on local bbc tv this evening it seems that a run of northerly winds, though that is onshore for the beaches in question. I would have thought that off shore winds would have done this but I haven't looked in to the science, but I have seen it at the beach. what ever has caused the sand to blow away from the beaches into the sea, it is certainly making a bit of news. with even the idea that sand should be brought in from other beaches to make the popular surfing beaches sandy again. I have noticed over the years the shape of the beach changes and sometimes it looks good as far as sandy and the waves are less good, whereas sometimes rocky exposed areas create better waves, anyway all it would need would be a storm with a swell from the right direction to put all the sand back anyway. it is strange that the major concern apart that of potential injury to novice surfers is what it looks like. read/watch more
